ISSS Skype Participation

print PDF
To participate remotely in the ISSS conference please take the following steps:
  • A few days before the conference, do the following:
    1. install skype software from http://www.skype.comexternal link
    2. launch the installed program
      • make up a skype name. Suggested to just use your own name
    3. Identity some equipment to enable your computer to function as a phone
      • You could use a microphone and available speakers (or headphones)
      • You could buy a USB phone or wireless headset
    4. Test your equipment through the skype software
      • With the Skype program running, you should notice an interface to test your equipment where you are prompted to say something and then it plays what you said back to you.
    5. communicate your skype name to John Kineman via email
      • He will need your skype name to be able to add you the skype conference on July 13th, 2008
      • He can invite up to 24 participants.
    6. John may want to set up a quick practice skype-conference a few days before the ISSS conference so everybody can test out the technology
      • Doing this will make the ISSS conference itself run more smoothly.
  • On the day of the conference, John will start the conference call.
    1. Once you connect, you will be able to participate and hear the audio

I will explore 3rd-party software that will be able to record the conference call to make the audio available for others after the conference.

The only thing that could mess things up is if John cannot use a computer with internet access at the conference or if he cannot obtain appropriate equipment so that the the people at the conference can hear the remote people. We will try to work out the technical issues well before the conference date.

You can purchase a wireless headset, wireless phone, or USB phone that is intended for use with the voice-over-IP technology. For example, one inexpensive option is the following: http://www.meritline.com/usb-skype-desktop-phone.htmlexternal link
There are many other options as well.
It you have a laptop, it may already have a built-in microphone and speakers.
